{Pool Side Beach Party} Tour

My gosh, I am sorry for saying this in almost every post, but it is HOT in Texas! Imagine it being so hot and humid that it makes it difficult to breathe...that is what it feels like daily here. Boo. So, you can imagine just how excited I am to be participating in the Pool Side Beach Party Tour hosted by Sprouting Jube Jube and Lulu & Celeste.

I chose to make the newly released Reef Walkers from New Horizons Designs because they seemed like the perfect coverup for her to wear over her bathing suit. I think that they are going to be just perfect for her!

I knew that I was going to have to make a few adjustments for my daughter, due to her different body shape, but they were pretty quick and easy. First I knew to adjust the rise for her, so I added 2" to the back rise only. Now seeing them on her, I probably should have decreased the front rise about 2" and just left the back as is...or even just added 1" as the crotch is slightly baggy on her. I made the size 16, and according to the sizing chart versus her measurements, I needed to add a total of 3" to the overall width. I divided that into quarters so that it was evenly dispersed on the pattern. So I ended up adding 0.75" to the both the back and front pieces along the outer seam. I also had to add 1.5" on the pocket, which I added in the center of the pattern piece as to not distort the intended look of the pocket. Lastly, I added 0.75" to each of the waistband pieces to even everything out. It sounds like a lot, but trust me when I say that it is quick. If you have any questions regarding altering sizing to fit a plus sized child, feel free to leave me a comment and I will try my best to answer it!

What I really like about this pattern is the piecing of the front along with the kangaroo pocket! They surely do give you that "beachy feeling", and the pocket is perfect for putting the little treasures in. The tutorial has you hem the bottom of the shorts to the outside and not the inside and tacking along the inner and outer edges, but my fabric did not want to stay folded so I went ahead and sewed 1/8" along the edge all the way around. I am totally digging the look of the wrong sided hem! For one last special touch, I added some special ribbon that I have been hoarding for some years from Renaissance Ribbons. I got it from the quilt show and they are just gorgeous!

Overall, I am very impressed with these shorts! I still have a few tweaks that I need to make for the next pair, but I am very impressed with how well that they fit. Total WIN in my book!!! You have no idea how hard that it is to make clothes fit her just right. I am glad that I actually have the ability TO make her clothing that fits her correctly. I hope that I have inspired you to make something fun for the pool side! Be sure to check out the others along on the tour for even more inspiration.

  1. I love your shorts! I've been eyeing this pattern for a while because that waistband looks so comfy I think my girls would love them. Good luck with the heat! I live in Indiana and have been complaining of the humidity, so I'm sure I couldn't handle Texas in the summer.
