{Easter Sweetheart Peplum} from Patterns For Pirates
I know that Easter has passed, but I hope that everyone had a nice day! For me and my daughter, I decided to make coordinating outfits. She is 8 now, so I am not sure how much longer it will be "cool" to dress like mommy!
For my pattern, I chose to make the Sweetheart Dress* and Me Hearties* from Patterns for Pirates. There has been such hype over this pattern, and I really wanted to try it out and see for myself what it was all about.
The Sweetheart Dress* is available in sizes XXS to 3X and the Me Hearties* is available in 3 months to 14 years, with multiple options for each...and we all know I am crazy for options. I really like to stretch my buck, so when there are multiple options for a pattern I really feel you get your money's worth by having the opportunity to make multiple outfits that look totally different...SCORE!!!! Also great for a Capsule Wardrobe on a budget; I'm just saying!
Patterns for Pirates is now switching over to layers on her patterns, so piecing it together was easier than ever without all the extra lines to get confused. Sewing these up was also surprisingly quick, even the overlay option that I made for mine. I think that I managed to spend about 3 hours total from printing to completion. I chose the Peplum for both because I have made too many dresses lately, and I honestly rarely wear a dress unless there is some special occasion; lunch with the girls, church, wedding...yep, that's about it.
One thing that I really liked about the pattern is that she gives you the option to print only the cutout for the circle skirt as opposed to printing ALL THOSE PAGES. If you have ever made a circle skirt before, you know what I am talking about. Not only does it use a TON of fabric, but also a ton of paper.
I have never made a Peplum top before, so one word of advice that I feel needs to be mentioned (especially if you are plus size like me). Make yourself a muslin first before you cut into that AWESOME fabric that you have been saving. If your measurements are average, then you may not have a problem, but I found that since my torso is much longer than average it was difficult to figure out exactly where the Peplum skirt should hit on my body. Technically you should muslin everything, but let's face it, we get busy and want to sew NOW...if anyone has an issue with instant gratification it's me ;) In the pattern she actually gives you the measurement for the length between your armpit and natural waist, but due to fabric content as well as but sizes, this can drastically change. I measured mine before cutting and thought that it would hit me at just the right point, but I think that I should have added some length to the bodice instead of just the skirt. Either way, I am happy with the way it turned out...definitely more babydoll-looking than intended Peplum.
For my fabric, I fell in LOVE with this Turquoise with Roses Liverpool from KnitPop with the pop of Coral Rose Lace added.
